Indonesia Like Never Before

Indonesia Like Never Before - EASTERN ROADS | Video from Volcom

It’s fair to say Eastern Roads is no ordinary surf video. It’s an epic travelogue of two surfers remembering that the journey itself is the destination. Reignite your desire for adventure, freedom and a surf-life long forgotten.

Shark kills bodyboarder on Reunion island

A man who ignored warnings not to surf off the coast of Reunion Island has died after being bitten on the leg by a shark.

Authorities urged the public to observe bans on entering the water - part of an array of measures they have taken to try to reduce the number of shark attacks. Photo/Richard BOUHET/ AFP

Saint-André (France) (AFP) - A 26-year-old man bodyboarding off of Reunion island was killed by a shark on Tuesday, local officials said, in the latest attack in the waters of the Indian Ocean holiday destination.

It was the 20th recorded shark attack on the island since 2011, eight of which have been fatal, despite efforts by local authorities to install nets and warn locals and tourists about the dangers.

A policewoman holds the bodyboard of Alexandre Naussance, who was killed by a shark

"This accident happened even though swimming and other water sports are forbidden in this area," the local government office on French-administered Reunion said in a statement.

The man, a former shark spotter from the island once employed by the local surfing association, was pronounced dead after the shark bit through a major artery in his leg off the eastern coast near Saint-Andre.

Surfing competitions only returned to the Reunion in February 2016 after a five-year absence triggered by a shark attack on local surf champion Eric Dargent.

Surfing down the faces of the waves

Video from Carolyn Kovacs
Photos and videos never seem to be able to do the waves justice, but this one comes close. It was an awesome three days of sailing downwind from Bonaire to Cartagena, cruising along with 30-40 knot winds, holding between 6-9 knots with just the forward and main staysails up, and watch team three taking the speed record for the passage at 13.3 knots while surfing down the faces of one of the waves.

Le Grand Tahiti

Video from mark brightwell

On the 27th of August 2011 approximately 5 years ago I jumped on a plane to capture footage for my first feature film RAW THE MOVIE. What I witnessed with the days to follow was the greatest surfing show ever located at the notorious Teahupoo in Tahiti.

Our boat was one of the first into the line-up as the harbour was shut down from Tahitian Police as conditions were too dangerous (or so they thought). Luckily for us our boat was coming from 2 hours away which would allow us to be picked up from the point and straight into the action.

This is the final section to the feature film RAW THE MOVIE which won Mark Brightwell best cinematography in New York. The film was directed and co-produced by Mark Brightwell and Cohan Banfield and released physically and digitally in 2012 through their distribution partners.

COLD LINES - Surf in Iceland with Lee-Ann Curren

COLD LINES - Surf in Iceland with Lee-Ann Curren from Claudia Lederer
This is the result of hours of driving around Iceland, filming in the coldest cold, struggling against elves & spirits breaking my gear (haha) searching for some decent waves.. most importantly.. to have fun!!

Notes from Lee-Ann Curren :
After visiting on a regular basis for the past 5 years, Iceland has become almost like a second home to me. I'm not sure what attracts me so much about this place. Maybe the immensity of the landscapes that make you feel so vulnerable, yet very much alive, and leave you in a permanent state of awe and contemplation.I think this video describes perfectly what it feels like to be out there. Special thanks to Roxy for supporting us, Samaris for the beautiful music, and our local friends Ingo, Heidar, Elli, Steinar, Mother Earth, Betty, Hlynur, just to name a few, for making each trip to Iceland a new magical adventure.

Notes from Claudia Lederer :

"It’s hard to describe the feelings created by such a change of scenery.

Iceland’s untouched nature and its powerful, unreal landscapes provide total escapism and a real fascination for many of us. Day after day, while on the road searching for waves, the misty and cold atmosphere created an invitation for us to move to another world, fuelling our imagination with tales and legends where each rock generates a new mystical dimension.

Along with Lee-Ann Curren, we travelled like that for a few days, carried by winds and swell, on the hunt for waves that would allow us to bring back unique memories of this extraordinary region."

Ain't No Wave Pool - Mick Fanning on #TheSearch by Rip Curl

Video from Rip Curl

What if I told you there was an unknown sand-bottom right that is five kilometres long, breaks 20 metres off the beach, holds six foot of swell and has only been surfed by four people on the entire planet?

Would you believe me?

What if good-ol’-having-a-year-off-Mick Fanning was one of those surfers, and he told you that this wave had him haulin’ arse like an F1 driver down a strip of sand that never seemed to end.

Would you believe him?

This ain't no fucking wave pool! This is the real world. This is The Snake.

SCOTCH

SCOTCH from WASTED TALENT
Even the best laid plans can go awry. Strange roadside encounters, barren landscapes, suspect charts mixed with dangerous amounts of rum and fireworks (we've now learnt that letting them off inside a motorhome isn't for the best) . Enter the cumulation of an idea made after many Kronenbourgs one warm autumn evening in France.

For a change we made a plan. Bounced emails, made phone calls, penned the dates, even used 'excel' to 'budget'. Maxed the credit card and went for it. Planning things far in advance isn't something we are used too, and turning up at the end of a swell is never the easiest to stomach. However having a good time is something we pride ourselves in, and introducing enhanced levels of hedonism on a trip is something we simply must insist on. It was meant to be a traditional Scottish strike, but non co-operative meteorological conditions sent us to new levels of debauchery, and actually, I think we prefer it that way.

Presented by Monster Energy.

The Big Wave Project (Official Trailer )

The Big Wave Project (Official Trailer ) from Tim Bonython Productions
The Big Wave Project - A Band Of Brothers
Filmed and Directed by award winning ocean cinematographer Tim Bonython

Short Synopsis:
THE RAW AND UNCENSORED JOURNEY INTO ONE OF THE WORLD'S MOST EXCITING CHALLENGES: RIDING THE WORLD'S BIGGEST WAVE

It is a production that is everything Tim Bonython lives for when it comes to documenting surfing.

Big wave surfing has evolved so much over the past 10 years and his relationship with this genre of the sport that has grown more than any other.

The Big Wave Project is about just that. It's everything from where its come from to where it is now.

The production of the BIG WAVE PROJECT has taken Tim around the planet to interview the world’s most renowned big wave surfers to document the biggest & craziest waves. It’s a narrative film that will scare as much as it will exhilarate the viewer.

“The Danger Level increases as we attempt to climb a mountain of water where the peak keeps getting higher” Alex Gray, big wave surfer.

Five three years in the making, the BIG WAVE PROJECT follows a tight-knit crew of leading big wave surfers who are working together to attempt a personal goal that drills to core passion of surfing: Riding the World's Biggest Wave.

We hear candid, personal, no-holes barred accounts as the real fear of death walks side by side with ultimate personal glory.

The BIG WAVE PROJECT depicts the history of the how the sport has developed from humble origins to modern tow-in surfing with the latest challenges of returning to the simple art of unassisted paddling into 100-foot walls of water.

This progression collides with the best swell season in 30-years as the World's best paddle and tow into some of the greatest waves ever documented including what has been titled "the biggest wave ever attempted” featuring Aaron Golds infamous massive paddle-in wave at Jaws, Hawaii.
The BIG WAVE PROJECT also travels across Australia, Tahiti and finally to Europe's new frontier of Nazare, in Portugual.

The BIG WAVE PROJECT incorporated the best surfers on the planet from around the world.
Jamie Mitchell, Aaron Gold, Mark Healey, Ryan Hipwood, Grant “Twiggy” Baker, Billy Kemper, with insights from Peter Mel, Big Wave icon Greg Noll, the legendary late Brock Little and many more…
